Scroll Technology

Today Scroll technology has replaced conventional piston compressor technology as the industry standard. The compressor is much quieter, reliable and energy efficient as compared to others. For the longest time people from countries with developing economies such as India were apprehensive about buying air conditioning systems for their homes and offices because of the running costs of AC units. The electricity bills would be quite a bit higher than before the system was installed. Being the heart of the AC unit, the traditional compressors were responsible for high electricity consumption. Because of the introduction of scroll technology in air conditioning systems, now manufacturers have an opportunity to continue and use such advance air conditioning technology for better energy efficiency and responsible use of refrigerants.

Leon Creux was the person who first patented the scroll compressor in the United States of America and France in the year 1905. Since at that time, high tolerances required in sealing the compression chambers were unavailable, these compressors were not used. The concept was only revisited in the 1970s, after which new modification were made to the technology and used in HVAC products. Today however, the scroll technology is considered the most modern and apt for cooling products. There are quite a few advantages of using such innovative technology in HVAC instead of the traditional compressors. Some of the benefits are in aspects like reliability, efficiency, vulnerability and size.

Compared to other compressors the compressors made using scroll technology have fewer moving parts. This translates into more reliability, less maintenance and lesser noise. There is less chance of a breakdown in the system since this compressor has no valves. The design of a scroll compressor allows it an ability to produce higher cooling in comparison to the older models. This means energy efficiency and less electricity bills for the consumer. Not only is this aspect profitable for the individual or business using such cooling solutions, but also for the environment as it generates lesser carbon footprint. The new scroll technology compressors are compact and well-balanced. While this does not make a big difference when it comes to small air conditioning units for homes and offices, it does make a huge difference for commercial units. In the olden days large commercial complexes or supermarkets would need a separate room to keep them. The new technology saves consumers space as well as money spent in accommodation of the compressors.

Most wise consumers these days, not only look at brand name, reputation of the company, design of the model, and star rating, but also pay attention to the mechanism used to make the product. As a consumer the best way to save on energy and electricity usage, is to buy an air conditioning unit that uses scroll technology in their compressors. In India, most reputable brands known for their air conditioning units use this technology in their products.

Things to Know About Scroll Technology

Even though once you see how the scroll technology works, you are bound to think it is very simple, the fact remains that it is a fairly new technology that has revolutionized the refrigeration industry. According to the Ashrae’s HVAC Systems and Equipment Handbook the scroll compressors are defined as orbital motion, positive displacement machines that compress with two intermitting spiral shaped scroll members. It is believed that the first scroll compressor patent was out in the market as early as 1905, developed by a French engineer named Leon Creux. Quite ahead of its time, this compressor was not used much until the 1970s when the machining technologies were advanced enough to tap into its potential. Development continued and today scroll technology is used in a number of commercial and residential applications.

These days scroll compressors are manufactured by a large number of companies from around the world. While there may be slight differences in the shell design, scroll geometry, oil selection and so on, the basic mechanism and the fundamental features remain the same. In the last few decades the scroll compressor has proved that it is reliable and in many ways better than other technologies available today. Manufactured in a host of size up to 25 tons for large industrial use, scroll compressors are widely seen used for grocery display cases at supermarkets, bulk milk cooling units, air conditioners, refrigerators, marine containers, water chillers, large split condensing units, automotive air conditioning, etc.

Here are some of the advantages of the scroll technology compressor. It has excellent efficiency for full-load as well as part load. The unit has very few moving parts (three), which translates into less noise while running and also low vibration as compared to other technologies and Copeland compressors. This contributes to having less maintenance in the long run. The precise machining permits sealing vane flanks with a thin film of oil. Designs where there is no contact between the two scrolls are proven to be more efficient due to very less friction.

There are two sides to every coin, and since we have taken a look at the many advantages, it is only fair to know the disadvantages as well. There are two main drawbacks to the scroll technology compressors, and they are: the compressor cannot be disassembled for maintenance at the place of installation. Also, in places where multiple compressors are in use there is an incremental capacity on systems.

One of the most important reasons for the growing popularity of scroll technology compressors is that it saves energy. These compressors can produce powerful cooling without using a lot of power. This means lower electricity bills for the consumer, and better conservation of the environment. It is truly a win-win!

Copeland Scroll Compressor

First invented in the early 1900s, a scroll compressor is a form of air compressors. This is a device very commonly used in air conditioning systems, automotive air conditioners, and central heating pumps. As compared to the traditional piston-powered air compressors, the scroll compressors boast of running more smoothly and are much more energy efficient. Used for compressing air or refrigerants, the device has two scroll-like parts. One scroll stays fixed while the other scroll moves in circular motion inside the machine to help create high air pressure. While different types of AC compressors include scroll compressors, piston or reciprocating compressors, and screw compressors, there are quite a few advantages in using scroll compressors, especially a Copeland scroll compressor.

The Copeland compressor company was established in 1921 and since then it has steadily grown and is one of the most reputable and highly regarded companies in the business. Their product line ranges far and wide. The various compressors range in power, starting from compressors used in refrigerators and small air conditioning systems to large scroll compressor used for huge industrial units. To name some products, there is Copeland Scroll compressors, Copeland Scroll Ultratech compressors, Copeland Scroll ZRK5, Copeland Scroll ZPK5, Copeland Scroll commercial compressors, Copeland Scroll 7- 15 horsepower with Copeland’s Advanced Scroll Temperature Protection (ASTP), Copeland Scroll Digital, and many more.

Scroll compressors are extremely popular for usage in air conditioning and refrigeration systems all around the world, as they provide many benefits particularly with regards to money. There are some distinct reasons for this that can be split into four headings, namely: fewer parts, high performance, energy savings, and size. As compared to other compressors the scroll compressor needs fewer parts to work, which in turn translate into higher reliability and less disturbance (noise). Since there are few parts involved, there is a much less chance of breakdown or lack of efficiency. Maintenance too is easier as well as cost-effective.

Scroll compressors produce superior cooling capacity as compared to standard compressor models. Another advantage of scroll compressors is their size benefit. There was a time when old-fashioned compressors needed a lot of space because of their huge sizes. These are very compact in size. This is a big advantage to businesses that need large refrigerators or AC systems such as supermarkets, corporate offices, etc.

The most important advantage of a Copeland scroll compressor or any reputable brand’s scroll compressor is the energy efficiency factor. These compressors can produce the same cooling capacity as standard model compressors, while using less power. This means less electrical usage or we can say as energy saving devices. With the value of money touching the sky, saving on electricity bills and doing something good for the environment is a win-win for any customer.

AC Compressor

An AC compressor is the part of an air conditioning system that does the job of compressing cool, low pressure gas into a hot, high pressure gas. This compressing process plays an imperative part in the multi-step course that helps in keeping the area cool. When we switch the AC ‘on’ it starts with low pressure gas traveling into the air conditioning compressor, which compresses the gas into a high pressure gas of a much higher temperature. After this, the gas is cooled down in the condenser where it turns into liquid still under high pressure followed by it traveling to the evaporator. In the evaporator this liquid is pushed through a small hole into tubing, where it uses the heat from the room to be cooled and turns back into gas. Yet again this low pressure, cool gas is transported back to the AC compressor where the whole process is repeated until the air conditioning is switched ‘off’.

The refrigerants used in air conditioning systems are fluids that are gases with a low boiling point that can be easily converted from a liquid to a solid. One of the most popular refrigerants from the past was Freon. It was used all over the world, until it was discovered that when Freon escaped into the environment, it causes deterioration of the precious ozone layer of the atmosphere. Thanks to this fact and the awareness of global warming and related ecological problems faced by the world today, pretty soon more ozone-friendly fluid alternatives were used as refrigerants.

Similar considerations are being applied to other parts of the air conditioning systems in the market today. The focus has shifted from producing units that look fashionable and give superior cooling no matter what the adverse effect on environment, to producing AC systems that not only look contemporary, but also boast of being eco-friendly and energy efficient. And the awareness and yearning to do at least a little bit for the environment is not just limited to the manufacturers, but also consumers. A majority of buyers of air conditioning units nowadays do not mind shelling out more money to buy a quality product that is conserving the ecology and is energy efficient, compared to a low star rated product that is cheap but will run up electricity bills for years to come.

AC compressor is an important part of any AC system. It is also one of the most expensive parts of the unit. Hence, it is important to maintain it in order for it to work effectively. A good way may be to change or clean the air filter to extend the compressor’s life. You could make arrangements to get the filters changed every three months or as needed.

Copeland Scroll Compressor

A scroll compressor is also referred to as a spiral compressor, a scroll vacuum pump or a scroll pump. All these terms point to a device manufactured specifically to do the job of compressing air or refrigerant. The primary use of this device is in air conditioning systems. A typical scroll compressor uses two interleaving scrolls to compress, pump or pressurize gas and liquids. Today Copeland Scroll compressor technology is one of the leaders in this field. Their products are known far and wide for its superior efficiency, proven reliability and ease of installation. The company also has one of the broadest product line in the industry that can be used in singular or tandem configurations and be modulated to increase efficiency and comfort for the consumer.

The design benefits of the Copeland scroll compressor are many. It provides better liquid handling meaning protection against liquid damage. This can be managed because the axial and radial compliance separate in the presence of liquid refrigerant. The device provides greater efficiency in comparison to other competitor operating range products in the market. It also produces less sound and very low vibration levels in comparison to other traditional compressors available these days. Other aspects that put this company at the highest level of achievement over others is that the products have unmatched reliability. With 70% fewer moving parts within the unit, ability to start under any adverse conditions including system load, compact in size and lightweight makes it easy to service and maintain, simple in design, engineered for optimum performance with today’s chlorine-free refrigerants, and having no complex internal suction and discharge valves for quieter operation and higher reliability, the company is a undisputed leader in residential as well as commercial units.

The journey for this brand does not end here. The company has its eyes set on making the products more environmentally friendly, provide indoor comfort and better efficiency, even though at the present time itself this innovative technology is enabling air conditioning systems to operate at an energy saving two-thirds capacity approximately 80 percent of the time.

In view of the fact that a Copeland Scroll compressor can help reduce energy use by 20 to 60 percent in a home unit, there are a large number of companies from around the world that are switching to such innovative technologies for their air conditioning products to tap into perks like having a product range that gives high energy savings, uninterrupted cooling performance, lowest environmental impact, lowest life cycle cost by design, and longer tube length. With so many advantages on your side, it is no wonder more and more air conditioner manufacturers from around the world are now looking at Copeland Scroll for further enhancements in the systems and developments to take the industry a notch or two further.
