AC Compressor

An AC compressor is the part of an air conditioning system that does the job of compressing cool, low pressure gas into a hot, high pressure gas. This compressing process plays an imperative part in the multi-step course that helps in keeping the area cool. When we switch the AC ‘on’ it starts with low pressure gas traveling into the air conditioning compressor, which compresses the gas into a high pressure gas of a much higher temperature. After this, the gas is cooled down in the condenser where it turns into liquid still under high pressure followed by it traveling to the evaporator. In the evaporator this liquid is pushed through a small hole into tubing, where it uses the heat from the room to be cooled and turns back into gas. Yet again this low pressure, cool gas is transported back to the AC compressor where the whole process is repeated until the air conditioning is switched ‘off’.

The refrigerants used in air conditioning systems are fluids that are gases with a low boiling point that can be easily converted from a liquid to a solid. One of the most popular refrigerants from the past was Freon. It was used all over the world, until it was discovered that when Freon escaped into the environment, it causes deterioration of the precious ozone layer of the atmosphere. Thanks to this fact and the awareness of global warming and related ecological problems faced by the world today, pretty soon more ozone-friendly fluid alternatives were used as refrigerants.

Similar considerations are being applied to other parts of the air conditioning systems in the market today. The focus has shifted from producing units that look fashionable and give superior cooling no matter what the adverse effect on environment, to producing AC systems that not only look contemporary, but also boast of being eco-friendly and energy efficient. And the awareness and yearning to do at least a little bit for the environment is not just limited to the manufacturers, but also consumers. A majority of buyers of air conditioning units nowadays do not mind shelling out more money to buy a quality product that is conserving the ecology and is energy efficient, compared to a low star rated product that is cheap but will run up electricity bills for years to come.

AC compressor is an important part of any AC system. It is also one of the most expensive parts of the unit. Hence, it is important to maintain it in order for it to work effectively. A good way may be to change or clean the air filter to extend the compressor’s life. You could make arrangements to get the filters changed every three months or as needed.
